Lyrics

ESPLANADE (by Scott Detweiler)

There were barges on the river
The sun was in the sky
Oak trees poured the shade
On people passin by
So Monique walked through the market
With her parasol
Shoppin for her groceries for her dinner
That was all
But somehow she met a man
With a handsome southern face
And he walked her down a street
Called Esplanade
Esplanade, Esplanade
He walked her down a street
Called Espanade

They were married in September
In the cathedral in the square
Flowers, rice and tears
And all her friends were there
They honeymooned for nine days
Down in Galveston
Time alone together
Far from everyone
They came back to New Orleans
On a sunny Saturday
To a mansion on a street
Called Esplanade
Esplanade, Esplanade
To a mansion on a street
Called Espanade

War came and took her husband
To a country far from home
Poor Monique lived in the lonely
House alone
3 months, 5 long days
And 7 hours passed
When a soldier called and said he
Was never comin back
So she took her life away
The stool fell
And then she swayed
At midnight on a street
Called Esplanade
Espanade, Esplanade
At midnight on a street
Called Espanade

Oh, and sometimes even to this day
When the midnight churchbells call
You can see Monique the widow
With her parasol
Esplanade, Esplanade
At midnight walks Monique
The ghost of Esplanade

God will love you if you do the best you can
If you do the best you can
God will love you in the end
